How we make New Years Resolutions impossible for ourselves

We’ve been fooled. We’ve made it as hard on ourselves as possible to achieve our New Years Resolutions. Here’s how:
🚩Our goals aren’t for ourselves, but in the service of how others see us.
🚩We must tackle it alone.

In 2024, I made a long list of resolutions. I successfully completed two of them:
✅ I graduated with my Masters thanks to the expertise, guidance and time of many instructors, classmates and friends.
✅ I finished the novel I’d been writing for four years. That might sound like a solo endeavor, but I had to make myself accountable to 10 beta readers to get to those two magic words, “The End.”

Now, listen, both of those goals definitely affect the way people might see me — just the way that eating healthier, joining a gym, getting a promotion or building wealth impacts how people see us. We say we’re doing it for ourselves, but we don’t live in a vacuum: Our actions and choices have a direct impact, for better or worse, on how we are perceived.

These two particular goals, however, were made specifically with the intention of feeling richer in mind and artistic spirit, and in alignment with my three “purpose pillars:” Make Art, Make Joy, Make Change. And neither could have been completed without my community of support.

But we’ve been tricked into thinking that asking for support devalues our success. As if the fewer people we have to thank in our acceptance speech, the more impressive we are.

“Our cultural story that we make it on our own, without help, while pulling ourselves up by our own bootstraps, is a toxic denial of our essential interdependence and the reality that we are all in this, literally, together,” writes Tema Akun, who developed the White Supremacy Culture characteristics.

See? I told you we’ve been fooled.

So as we sit on this New Moon day (a great time to make 2025 plans, by the way!), consider how your New Years Resolutions serve YOU, and what kind of assistance you could use in making them.

And if you need a little help, I’m a coach who’s willing to keep you accountable, energize you, and help you identify and clear the barriers that stand in your way. Together we can go dancing into 2025, doing it for ourselves and rejoicing in our own power.
